Abortions by Resident Zip Code Map for 1998 for New York City, Long Island and Westchester, with data obtained from the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Biometrics

Why is there only data for 1998?
1998 was the most current and complete set of data we were able to obtain when we began this project. We have plans to launch more current data as the NYS DOH makes it available and we are able to process it. This is a very time-consuming and costly project, but we feel it is more than worth the effort, as it puts the scope of the problem into true perspective for the first time.

LOOKING AT THE FACTS
To present the statistics in a graphic, easy-to-read format, Project REACH uses recent reports from the Department of Health to highlight the percentage of pregnancies ending in abortion in zip code regions throughout the city. From these graphics it is clear that women in the poorer areas tend to turn to abortion more often. Financial strain and limited access to affordable health care are too often reasons these women and their families resort to abortion. Project REACH exists to address this reality, by providing support to the pregnancy centers that help these women choose life. These centers offer counseling, financial assistance, medical referrals, baby items and vital information in a time of crisis, and operate with the conviction that no woman should feel pressured into abortion through economic or social reasons.

How do I use this map?
First, in order to view this map, you will need the Flash Player plugin for your browser. Most browsers already have this player pre-installed, but if you click thru to the map and don't see anything, you will need to download and install the Flash Player.

The map will first show you an overview of the abortion rates for New York City, Long Island and Westchester. These percentage rates were calculated by dividing the number of total pregnancies by the number of reported abortions. By moving your cursor over each county you will be able to see the actual number of births, abortions and overall abortion rates in the statistics viewing window in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

For further information you may then click on any of the counties to be taken to a more detailed map. This map will show all the available zip codes for that area. Keep in mind that not all the zip codes in every county are graphically represented. For zip codes where the statistics were very low, they were combined with a nearby zip code or only included in the overall county total. This was done to ensure the privacy of individuals and to streamline the presentation of the maps.

On the left hand side there are also various navigation tools. Use the Back button to return to the map you were previously on, and use the Zoom and Pan controls to expand or contract the map and move around in it.

How can I find out what the abortion rate is in my ZIP code?
Simply browse to your county and locate your zip code on the map. You may also use the Search Box on the left hand side. Simply type in your zip code and you will be taken to the individual map.
